Friends Board Member Wins Award

At the March Board meeting, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Gamma Chapter of Nevada presented Friends Board Member Donna Harper with the Delta Kappa Gamma Apple Award. President of the local chapter, Pat Goeppinger and member Susan Luzzi attended the meeting to present the state award for Donna’s application of the Friends’ Traveling Trunk Program.

The award came with a $550 donation towards her project of creating a new trunk for the Museum’s trunk program that focuses on the difference of archaeology and paleontology using the theme “Skeletons and Fossils." All Clark County Schools can use this trunk.

Enter Our Street Photography Contest

The Friends will be sponsoring a “Street Photography" Contest this summer. The contest is open to all residents and visitors to the area, but the contest is limited to Street Photos of the Las Vegas/Southern Nevada area. The guidelines for the contest are:

• The focus will be on “street photography," not studio, portrait, or other professional art.
• The Friends will publicize the contest on our website and Facebook, and on two other public sites.
• We accept both color and black and white photographs.
• We accept only jpeg submissions to the contest to reduce the logistics challenges involved in conversion of file types. We will print and display only the top pictures (25-50, undecided at this time).
• We will announce the dates for the contest and Museum exhibition in the May newsletter. Exhibition details will include:
• A running loop display of all submissions, broadcast on screen.
• Display of all top pictures, highlighting the top five.
• Lite refreshments for all guests.
• Awards for top five pictures (minimal - $25 to $100).

The Friends Need Your Donations

As stated in the March newsletter, the Friends have embarked on a project to assist the Museum staff with items that are needed, but were not included in the 2020 budget. We have allocated $3,000 to purchase items on a “wish list" generated and prioritized by the staff. In the first month, we have acquired the following items for the staff:

• Stereoscopic viewer for Sarah in photographs
• A rebuilt computer for Stacy in Education
• New wireless printer for use in the downstairs offices
• 24 clothes hangers for Karen in costumes
• 5 research books for Sali in collections

We continue to seek Friends members who are willing to donate money to obtain the specific items listed below. If you give for a specific item, that item will be donated in your name.

Donations can be either mailed to the Friends at the Museum's address, dropped off in the donation box, or delivered at the monthly Friends meeting. The “wish list" items still needed with estimated costs are:

• Large photo/manuscript scanner - $350
• Funding for digitalization of film - $50/film; 125 films available
• Specialty clothes hangers for costumes - $240/24
• Books (prices below are for new books; used books from the same author/date are acceptable):
• Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology by Moore, 1997 - $175

Put the Friends May 2 Book Fair On Your Calendars

The Friends will be hosting a Book Fair at the Barnes & Noble at 567 N. Stephanie Street, Henderson, on May 2. The Book Fair will run from 9 am to 9 pm, so stop by anytime during the day, say hello, and make a purchase. For any purchases that you make that day, a percentage of the total will go to the Friends, and subsequently, the Museum. There is no extra cost or donation on your part. Barnes & Noble will make the donation from their revenue based on the amount of sales that day. Anything in the store, except electronics, is eligible.

So, if you're hunting for a Mother's Day gift, or a Father's Day gift, or even a graduation gift, May 2nd is a great time to buy, and Barnes & Noble is a great place to make a thoughtful purchase! We'll even have free gift wrapping available.
